LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Two hospitals in Lubbock are celebrating the same designation this week.
Both Covenant and UMC have been bumped up to a Level IV in their Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
The ranking comes from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
It's a big deal for both UMC and Covenant.
Level IV is the the highest level of care available for premature and critically-ill newborns.
The new designation comes after an in-depth site visit from the Texas EMS Trauma & Acute Care Foundation's NICU Verification Program.
It is the highest designation from the state for neonatal care, meaning that both those facilities have the equipment and the expertise to care for infants born earlier than 32 weeks gestation and weighing less than 3.3 pounds.
