KCBD Cares: Registration open for new, free grief recovery program in Lubbock

KCBD Cares: Registration now open for new, free grief recovery support group on South Plains

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Heartache comes in many forms, but now there is a new grief support group on the South Plains to help people cope with loss.

The Family Guidance and Outreach Center of Lubbock has partnered with Combest Family Funeral Homes to provide a six-week grief recovery program to the community free of charge.

“Grief is messy. It’s an event that will rock you to your core,” said Kevin Combest, owner of Combest Family Funeral Homes and the neighboring property, Venue on Broadway.

Combest helps people cope with loss every day.

“People may try to dance around the issue in their life, but ultimately, they are going to have to go through it,” Combest said.

Combest and Abby Reed, the Executive Director of the Family Guidance Outreach Center, hope this program will provide the tools needed to help navigate through that loss.

“Some people think there is a set process of what grief is supposed to be, and that is just not the case. Everybody deals with grief differently because all grief is different,” Reed said.

Reed said everyone is welcome to attend the program, no matter the heartache.

“There is grief by the loss of maybe a divorce, or separation, or moving to a new city, starting your life completely over, someone being deployed, losing a pet, losing a best friend. It’s not always death, but a lot of times it is,” Reed said.

Reed wants to make it clear, they are not counselors or therapists, but facilitators trained in the Grief Recovery Method who, at the end of this program, can help direct people who would like further services.

“The process of the Grief Recovery Method is aimed at helping each individual person who comes find their path to get through it," Reed said.

Organizers said often times, people will mask their grief. One of the goals of this program is to help identify and address the heartache.

“You’ll never get over the grief, but it helps you cope with it moving forward,” Reed said.

The grief recovery program runs every Tuesday at 10 a.m. from Sept. 25 to Oct. at the Venue on Broadway.

Venue on Broadway is next door to Combest Family Funeral Homes at 2202 Broadway.

Reed said schools have contacted them to see if they can offer similar programs to students who are dealing with grief. Reed hopes to start working with students in the spring of next year.
