The Midland ISD School Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Matthew Powell will join the district’s leadership team as General Counsel on November 5th.
Powell will be responsible for providing direct legal counsel and representation for the Board of Trustees, Superintendent, and administrative staff.
Powell most recently served as Criminal District Attorney for Lubbock County where he was responsible for all Civil Actions, Criminal Prosecution of Misdemeanor and Felony cases, and supervised a total staff of approximately 100. Other previous legal roles include Assistant County Attorney in Montgomery County and Assistant District Attorney in Orange County.
“We are honored to welcome Mr. Powell,” said Rick Davis, president of the Midland ISD School Board of Trustees. “He will be critical in advising the district on legal and regulatory issues impacting our students, staff, and district, and he will be key in supporting the School Board with our Lone Star Governance work.”
Powell holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Texas Tech University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Tulsa. He also brings teaching experience to Midland ISD by having worked as an Adjunct Professor at the Texas Tech School of Law and at Wayland Baptist University. Powell has lectured for the Texas District and County Attorneys Association, the National District Attorneys Association, and the Association of Government Attorneys in Capital Litigation. He has also served as chair and lecturer for the American International Law Institute.
