LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A major change today at United Blood Services. It will still provide the same services to the same hospitals with the same non-profit mission and the same faces there to greet you.
But Brandon Baker, long time spokesman for UBS, says the UBS name is gone and the blood center will now be known as Vitalant. 'The name Vitalant is rooted in the word vital and that speaks to a vital need and that's blood donations. 127 blood centers across the nation were already under the United Blood Services umbrella anyways. So this makes it so there's one unified name across the nation."
UBS has been in Lubbock for 65 years.
Baker says this is not a merger or an acquisition. It is just a re-branding that will unify more than 100 blood centers nationwide. In West Texas alone, he says we use well over 100 pints of blood a day, every day of the year. Vitalant is hoping a unified name will reach new people and make all the blood centers work better as a team.
