Lubbock man charged with DWI after crashing into building

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - 19-year-old Simon Rios Hernandez is behind bars, charged with DWI, speeding, and expired registration after crashing into the Varsity Jewelers building at 1311 University Avenue on Friday evening.

Police were called to the area at 5:07 p.m. and found Hernandez and his vehicle in the alley behind the building.

The officer said that when Hernandez saw police he immediately put his hands behind his back and said, “Take me to jail.”

The arrest report says Hernandez told police he had been drinking and wrecked his vehicle.

The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol and said Hernandez was unsteady on his feet.

He is currently in the Lubbock County Detention Center held on $1,500 bond.
