LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Coming off an Elite Eight season, the first ever in program history, the Red Raiders held their media day Tuesday afternoon. There are a lot of new faces on the team from all over the globe and Head Coach Chris Beard likes that. “We’re like America’s team. We’re like the melting pot. We have about 5 different languages going around in our locker room. I like this team. I like our team chemistry. I like our effort every day. We just have to get a lot more consistent.”
Freshman Josh Mballa is from Bordeaux, France so what’s his take on West Texas? “I like it so far. The weather is great. It’s like pretty chill, small town. There’s more building in France. A lot of places to go. It’s been great here.”
Senior Tariq Owens transferred in from St John’s in New York so Lubbock is a big change for him. “What’s really weird is how flat it is. I can see so far. I’ve never really seen a flood but the other day it rained crazy. That’s new to me.”
Senior Matt Mooney came in from South Dakota and he’s enjoying Lubbock. “Lubbock, Texas is a little bit different. It’s a little warmer here. People are real nice. Some people walk around in cowboys boots. Haven’t really seen that before. I like it a lot so far.”
The Red Raiders open the 2018-19 season hosting Incarnate Word on Tuesday, November 6.
