LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - “This is the highest quality, highest-ranked teams on the men’s and women’s side that we have probably have ever put on ever,” Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Wes Kittley said.
This weekend, all eyes from the collegiate track world will be on Lubbock, as the Red Raiders are set to host 11 nationally-ranked teams in the Texas Tech Classic.
“This is the biggest meet in the history of our school,” Kittley said. “I have been here 20 years and to have teams from the east coast to the west coast, 11 teams in the top 25 and probably seven or eight teams in the top 10, this is probably the premiere meet in the country, I don’t know anybody that can top this one.”
Premiere facilities bring in premiere talent and since the Sports Performance Center was built, athletes have been getting great times and have been setting personal bests, encouraging programs from far and wide to come to the Hub City to compete in one of the nation’s top indoor venues.
“I think when we started putting up great times here, last year, especially the sprint people,” Kittley said. “They were calling me and saying they wanted to come here, next year and to get them on the list. So, it has been over a year that they all want to get in and use this facility.
With so much competition to push his team, Coach Kittley hopes to see his squad make a lot of marks and times that will qualify them for the national meet.
“I was talking to the guys in the 60 (meter) and 60 hurdles, long jump, triple jump, 400 (meter), 800 (meter), those are going to be some incredible teams that have top people in the country,” Kittley said. “So, we need to be able to step up and hopefully get some qualifying. For indoors you have to be top 16 per event. You don’t really know that until the end of the year or right after the Big 12’s (meet), but you kind of know that if you get a big mark that you are going to be safe.”
