What is love? Lubbock kids, seniors share advice on Valentine’s Day

What is Love? Seniors and Kids answer

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - In 2019, Americans are expected to spend over $933 million on cards for Valentine’s Day, telling people in their lives that they are loved.

But what is love? In honor of Valentine’s Day, we talked with senior citizens and a kindergarten class at Lubbock-Cooper South Elementary.

According to one gentleman at the Maggie Trejo Supercenter, “Love is practically everything. If you don’t have love you’re not happy and it means all things to me.”

Another says, “Love is eternal, I think.”

While to one 6-year-old, love is caring.

To some individuals, love is a person.

One kindergarten girl said, “Love is.. to love your mom and dad.”

While to a senior at the Supercenter, “Love means to me being with my granddaughter; she’s taking care of me - and being here with my friends talk and enjoy ourselves.”

To others, love is shown in action.

“Intense affection,” one senior says.

Another child said, “Love means that be kindful, and kindful means that you love others and be nice to others...how you be kindful is showing respect.”

No matter your age, love can he shown in everyday tasks.

Many kindergartens say they help their families with chores.

“I do the dishes.”

“Getting his toothbrush ready.”

“I make hot chocolate!”

Another woman who has been married for over 50 years said her husband’s love is shown every morning.

“If he doesn’t bring me coffee, I don’t get up, so he brings me coffee every morning.”

For those celebrating Valentine’s Day with long-term partners, the seniors offered some secrets to staying together.

One man said, “Your wife is a princess. Your wife is one of the best things in the world. Keep her as a princess and that’s your secret.”

Another woman says that for a relationship to succeed, “Understanding each other, loving each other,” is imperative.

One kindergarten said that success is built on forgiveness, “You can forgive people and show kindness. It makes people happy and their hearts happy.”

However one loves though, many 5 and 6 year olds agree, there is one way to really show how you feel.

“A hug.”

“Give people hugs.”

“By giving them hugs.”

“You can give people a hug.”

“Love people means you can hug them or kiss them when you love them.”

“Hugs make you feel better.”

So while everyone, young and old, has their own ideas about love, they can all come together and celebrate it on Valentine’s Day.
