Sudan woman qualifies for Boston Marathon

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Tara Carr is a business-owner, wife, mom, and.. marathon runner.

“I had to see what God gave me, and at that point I didn’t care what it looked like to anyone else. I just knew that I had to do it for myself, I couldn’t live with the regret of not knowing,” Carr said.

Carr said she tried to tell herself at the beginning that it was just for fun.

“But, I’m so competitive,” Carr said, “it’s just turned into a whole other thing.”

She started training a little over a year ago. Next month, she’s competing in the Boston Marathon.

Carr said running is a job now.

“It’s a job that I love, it’s what I want to do,” Carr said. “I would run all day. I just love it.”

She is really thankful when she runs.

“It puts everything in perspective, I see everything God has created. I feel like life is so much more simple,” Carr said.

Tara registered for a 5-K in Atlanta last week, but switched to the half-marathon at the last second.

Brittany Pendley, a friend of Tara’s, said she sprouted wings and took off.

“Her goal was to make top five, and she bested out and got first. It’s really, really cool,” Pendley said.

Carr is from the small town of Sudan, Texas. Her sponsors are family, friends, farmers and ranchers.

Most elite runners of her caliber are sponsored by athletic wear companies, but Tara is representing West Texas.

Those around her say she is loving, compassionate and giving.

“It’s pretty inspiring. I’m not a runner at all, but it’s inspired me to go after my own dreams also,” Pendley said.

“I want everybody to do their best, and I want to always push everybody forward to be their best. But, I’m going to do everything I can do to win,” Carr said.

Carr’s next goal is to qualify for the Olympics.

“I’m willing to put in the work, and I believe that God’s going to bless me with the ability to do it, if it’s His will. And, I want His will above all,” Carr said.

Carr’s plan is to run in the Mayor’s Marathon in Lubbock just 13 days after the Boston Marathon.
