COCHRAN COUNTY, TX (KCBD) - A suspect was killed Wednesday after a shootout with law enforcement officials, following a short chase from Levelland to Whiteface.
The Texas Rangers have launched an investigation into the matter.
Authorities report at around 4:16 p.m. Wednesday a Department of Public Safety trooper and a DPS special agent tried to stop the suspect, who was driving a 2006 Chevrolet pickup, for a traffic violation in Levelland.
The suspect has identified as Leonardo Gallegos Jr., 40, of Muleshoe.
Gallegos refused to stop and drove away from law enforcement, according to DPS. While chasing the suspect, state troopers used tire deflation spikes to try and stop the vehicle but the suspect continued driving.
The suspect eventually stopped in a field northwest of Whiteface and shot at law enforcement. Officers returned fire and the suspect was injured, and later pronounced dead at the scene.
Gallegos had active warrants at the time of the incident for Possession of a Controlled Substance out of Reagan County Sheriff’s Office and Failure to Register as Sex Offender out of Muleshoe Police Department.
