LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The state health department says a 22-year-old man from Rio Arriba County is hospitalized in Albuquerque with hantavirus.
The Health Department said Thursday it's the third hantavirus case in New Mexico this year.
A 25-year-old woman from Santa Fe County and a 65-year-old man from San Miguel County also contracted the illness. Both have recovered.
Health department veterinarian Paul Ettestad says most people get the deadly disease when cleaning out enclosed areas that have mouse droppings.
Early symptoms of hantavirus are fever and muscle aches, a headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and a cough.
The health department says people who think they have hantavirus should seek medical help.
