Hispanic health program expands to Santa Fe

Associated Press - October 5, 2009 8:05 PM ET

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A program providing health education, screening and referrals to the state's Hispanic population is expanding to northern New Mexico.

Gov. Bill Richardson and Mexico's first lady, Margarita Zavala, announced the opening of the Ventanilla de Salud - or "Window of Health" - program in Santa Fe at a news conference Monday.

The program will operate out of a grocery store on the south side of Santa Fe on the first Monday and Tuesday of each month.

Organizers expect to expand the program to Espanola early next year.

There is already a similar program at the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque.

It's a bilingual and bicultural effort that provides information about health insurance availability, services at community clinics, and education on health topics.
