SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Santa Fe County Commissioner Harry Montoya is running for the Democratic nomination for state land commissioner next year.
Montoya said Thursday he wants the Land Office to do more renewable energy projects on state land to diversify the revenues generated for public education. The office manages 9 million acres of surface land and 13 million acres of mineral rights.
Montoya has served on the county commission since 2003. He is chief executive of Hands Across Cultures Corp., an Espanola-based nonprofit that provides services including drug prevention education in schools.
Other Democratic candidates are Public Regulation Commission chairman Sandy Jones and former Land Commissioner Ray Powell. Two Republicans have said they're running: retired law enforcement official Errol Chavez and former Bernalillo County GOP executive director Bob Cornelius.
