State re-launches personalized license plate program

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - New license plates could lead to millions in revenue for the state. Texas is re launching its personalized plate program with a new company and a guaranteed return of $25-million.

The clock is ticking down to November 19th. That's when folks can purchase a new plate. This is round two for My-Plates. It started in Texas in August of 2008, but the company who ran it stopped operations in November of last year due to the economy.

During that time, nearly 1,300 people ordered a new plate, and as part of the program, the state saw nearly $170,000 deposited into the general fund. This summer, law makers awarded a new contract to a joint venture between a Dallas company and a Nacogdoches company that will run the program under the My-Plates name.

The state will receive money from every plate sold, and is guaranteed a minimum return of $25,000 over five years. The plates will cost less than before, dropping by $10 to $200 from last year. Pricing depends on how many letters and numbers you need to spell out your particular combination. Cost also drops for folks who order a five or ten year plate, instead of a one year plate.

It's also important to point out that this program does not cost tax dollars, and the plates will still be made in a Huntsville prison. This does not affect regular plates or the charity and non-profit plates. They will still be issued through the state, and the cost will not change.
