LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Las Cruces' police chief says he'll retire at the end of the month after more than 30 years with the department.
Harry Romero says he wants to spend more quality time with his family. He retires Nov. 30.
Romero began his career as a radio dispatcher in 1974. He made sergeant in 1990 and became chief in 2004.
During Romero's tenure, the Las Cruces Police Department expanded several community policing teams. They include units that investigate gangs and domestic violence.
Las Cruces' population has steadily increased during Romero's tenure, but crime has remained fixed or declined, as happened with robberies and rapes.
Romero is a Las Cruces native and plans to remain after his retirement.
