Volunteers open toy shops to aid military families

Associated Press - December 4, 2009 1:35 PM ET

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Volunteers are setting up "toy shops" at military bases around the country to give spouses and wounded soldiers the chance to pick up free toys for their children.

The nonprofit Operation Homefront will open a shop at the National Guard Armory in Fayetteville on Friday. Other shops will open near bases with the highest level of deployments, including Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Stewart, Ga.; and Fort Campbell, Ky.

The group expects to give toys and books to 3,000 military spouses and 10,000 military children. The program is funded through a $1.1 million donation from Walmart.
