DEMING, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police plan sobriety checkpoints throughout Saturday in Luna, Grant and Hidalgo counties.
The Winter SuperBlitz is an effort by law enforcement to remove drunk and impaired drivers from the roads.
State police also plan a saturation patrol on New Year's eve, with additional officers on the road to handle the expected increased traffic.
Gov. Bill Richardson announced earlier this month New Mexico has fallen to 26th nationally in the number of DWI fatalities per vehicle mile traveled in 2008.
