Consider This... I'm Not Against Immigration

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - KCBD NewsChannel 11 recently ran a poll asking our viewers if they thought Texas should pass an immigration law similar to Arizona's. Of those who voted, 81 percent said yes and 19 percent said no.

Well I think the majority got it right and here's why:  That new Arizona law, in its simplest form, makes it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally. But what does that law actually do? It gives the police the authority to do what the federal government hasn't done - enforce a law that already exists. It's nothing new.

Consider this, if I get caught stealing a car, I go to jail. If I don't pay my taxes, I go to jail. Why does the same standard not apply for the thousands of people crossing our borders illegally?

I'm not against immigration; I'm against illegal immigration - just like I'm against stealing. And by the way, most of our families immigrated to this great country at some point.  And when they came, they took an oath to their new country, the flag, to learn the language, and pledged to honor the US Constitution.

I'll even say that I'm not opposed to some sort of amnesty program for those already here. That would help keep our economy stable.

But the fact is today's federal government has failed every state in the country. And it's time we put a stop to it. There is a legal process to becoming a citizen and I welcome anyone who does it right, whatever their skin color.

Arizona should be applauded for doing what our forefathers intended… protecting our country from foreign invasion. Washington and other states, especially Texas, should wake up and do the same.
