Widespread haze, smell of smoke in Lubbock comes from Shallowater fire

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – A thick haze filled the sky in parts of Lubbock Sunday afternoon, and for hours county officials searched for the source of the smoke. That search led them to a mobile home park near the Clovis Highway and County Road 6100 near Shallowater where a shed and telephone pole was on fire.

"All of a sudden we saw smoke and flames. They were taller than the house," said LeDonna Medford a nearby resident who helped put the fire out.

Flames shot up 20 feet in the air, melting wires and scorching a telephone pole. The old shed was burned to the ground in just a matter of minutes. "There were barrels of black smoke. Flames were up the high line poles, that's how tall they were. Everything was blazing," said Medford.

Instantly neighbors began grabbing anything they could to put the fire out. "We had buckets, water hoses, getting water out of the swimming pool," said Medford.

"We got lucky because everybody in the community was out here; there were probably about 20 people out here trying to help," said Sue Trell, another neighbor.

Trell's husband was one of the first neighbors to the fire, and focused on putting out the flames on the telephone poll. Getting too close, her husband received first degree burns and was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but was released just hours later.

"All across his chest he got burned. When he left in the ambulance he was red from the waist up, and it looked like severe burns. He had some blisters," said Trell.

By the time firefighters got to the scene, only a small area of grass was still burning. Neighbor's say they're lucky the fire didn't spread even further to anyone's home. "It got close to the pick-up, and it's not that far from either house," said Medford. "Luckily the wind was down. We all thank God for that."

Officials have not released what caused the fire.
