SEATTLE (AP) - James Paxton pitched into the seventh in a bounce-back start as the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 5-0 last night. Texas starter Nick Martinez allowed five runs on six hits and four walks.
HOUSTON (AP) - Chris Carter hit his 32nd homer to lift the Houston Astros over the Oakland Athletics 4-2 last night. Oakland starter Jason Hammel had retired 10 straight batters when he was replaced by Luke Gregerson for the eighth inning. Josh Fields pitched a scoreless eighth for the win and Chad Qualls did the same in the ninth for his 15th save.
IRVING, Texas (AP) - Dallas defensive end Anthony Spencer's recovery from microfracture surgery on his left knee is coming along well enough for him to start the season on the active roster. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says Spencer wouldn't be ready for the September 7th opener against San Francisco but would avoid a six-week stay on the physically unable to perform list.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Dez Bryant figures he has about a week left to work out a contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys because he doesn't want negotiations going on during the season. The fifth-year receiver is entering the final year of his rookie contract after teammate Tyron Smith recently got an eight-year extension. Bryant has a base salary of $1.8 million in 2014.
