Students Learn What It Takes To Be in the Navy

A group of youngsters from all over the South Plains is learning what it takes to set sail as members of the U.S. Navy. The Reese Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps has only been established for a few months, but they've already begun training young cadets.

"When we first started, we had five or six kids, and so far, we're turning out quite a few number of cadets and we're receiving more every month," explains Frank Sanchez, executive officer of the corps.

They're a growing unit of just more than 20 young cadets training for a career in the Navy.

"Our goal is to actually teach them responsibility, respect, stuff like that. If they want to join the Navy afterwards, more power to them," says Sanchez.

As part of their training at the reserve center, sea cadets learn everything from the history of the Navy to military marches.

"We'll teach them to march and we'll do just about everything the military does. As a matter of fact, we'll do everything the Navy does," says Sanchez.

This along with learning discipline that will benefit them beyond military life.

"It will help you get ready for college, but I'm not really ready for college," says the tiniest member of this unit, Gracie Sanchez. She already has big dreams of her own outside of the Navy. "I want to be an artist," she says. For now, Gracie learns the art of courage, honor, and commitment: ideals that will equip this unit for success.

"My vision for this unit is to be one of the top leading units in the nation," says Sanchez.

The sea cadets meet one weekend a month. The corps is open to students from the ages of 14 to 18.
