An update on the search for a new Texas Tech University Chancellor. NewsChannel 11 has learned that a new name has made the list of prospects to replace Dr. David Smith, but it's not a name unknown to Texas Tech.

Sources tell us that Dr. David Schmidly, former President of Texas Tech, is now on that list of speculated chancellor candidates. According to our sources, Schmidly has expressed interest in returning to Tech as its third Chancellor.

You may recall Schmidly served as the university president from 2000-to-2002. He received a bachelor and masters from Tech, and is a native of Levelland. During his time at Tech Schmidly had many accomplishments: He reached record high enrollment numbers; Acquired record high research dollars; helped bring Bob Knight to Texas Tech Basketball.

Dr. Schmidly is the current President and CEO of the Oklahoma State University System.

We're also told, that the Texas Tech Board of Reagents are close to naming an Interim Chancellor. Sources tell us that the leading candidate for that temporary position is Dr. Donald Haragan.

Dr. Haragan is currently a professor at Tech. He's also in charge of the Honors College. Haragan is no stranger to leadership at Tech, he served as Tech's president from 1996 to 2000. He also served as Interim President for Texas Tech when Schmidly left in 2002.

NewsChannel 11 contacted both Haragan and Schmidly, but have not heard back from either office.
