Lubbock Medical Examiner Identifies Body Found Near Shallowater

We now know the identity of the body found near Shallowater.  It is Kay Harrelson, the 51-year-old woman that disappeared Wednesday, August 9th.

Sunday, August 20th, a volunteer search party found the body in a bar ditch on FM 179 and County Road 6000 near Shallowater.  The body appeared to be mutilated and the head was detached from the body, investigators believe most likely by animals.

The medical examiner was able to use dental records to positively identify the body as Harrelson's.  The family has also been notified.   The Lubbock Police did not release the cause of death, which will be determined by the autopsy that began Monday.

Harrelson's body was found wearing a bloody shirt and underwear.  Authorities believe the body was outside in a ditch for 8 to 10 days.  Investigators are treating Harrelson's death a homicide investigation.
