Little Mitchell Pantoya made his debut, a little sooner than his parents expected. On October 23rd, Mitchell's mom, Michelle, realized he was on his way. So his father, Damian, called EMS. Mitchell was coming fast, so it was up to dispatcher, Jake Long, to talk them through the birth.
"On the phone, they did a great job," said Long. "You always want people who are going to be calm and responsive to you because you're trying to help them, and they did an amazing job."
"I'm glad my voice sounded calm, because I wasn't feeling that way," said Michelle Pantoya. "We're blessed to have such compassionate people on the EMS service, such as Jake Long, to talk us through a situation that was so terrifying, and I felt hysterical!"
On Tuesday, University Medical Center presented the Pantoya family with the "Raymond Davis Citizen Hero Award."
Raymond Davis was a paramedic, who died in 2003, while on duty with EMS. According to Greg Bruce of University Medical Center, Davis always strived to touch the lives of those he helped.
Now this award is given in his memory, to members of the public who perform extraordinary acts with a little help from first responders.
