Rep. Drew Darby, of San Angelo, submitted a bill Friday that would realign Angelo State University with Texas Tech. Friday was the last day of the 80th Legislative Session.
Darby said a delegation of Angelo State boosters met with Governor Rick Perry in February to express their desire that the school be taken out of the Texas State University System.
Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance says both schools could benefit from the merger. He says he is not for or against it, but would welcome Angelo State, should the merger happen.
Texas Tech already has satellite campuses in Abilene, Amarillo, El Paso, and Junction.
Angelo State has 6,200 students and 1,350 workers. University officials hope to have 10,000 students by 2028.
