Consider This... Memorial Day

This Memorial Day will be a very personal one for my family. Last week we received bad news from Iraq.

My cousin Jason was serving as a gunner in Baghdad when his Humvee encountered two IED's which detonated at the same time, completely destroying it. Jason received immediate treatment and is now on his way home.

Unfortunately the attack will leave Jason disabled, but he was one of the lucky ones. His sergeant and chief medic, who were in the front and rear passenger seats, were killed. It is a tragic but familiar story.

So consider this, whether you are for it or against it, Republican or Democrat, we all have something in common with war. Our sons, daughters, relatives, and friends are the soldiers fighting for our freedom and we should all support them and thank them every chance we get.

They are paying the price that we so often take for granted.

I am touched by an Anheuser-Busch commercial where an entire airport stopped and paid tribute to soldiers returning home from duty. That's the kind of reception they all deserve.

You and I can't do much to make war easier, but we can stop and say thank you every single time we see a man or woman in uniform.  It is the least we can do.

I can tell you when my cousin returns to Lubbock, he will be greeted with overwhelming gratitude and support for his service to our country.  And I will be proud when his name is added with my two grandfathers to the Lubbock Area Veterans Memorial right here in Lubbock.
