Detectives looking into first homicide in Lamesa since 2007

LAMESA, TX (KCBD) - Family members of a 65-year-old man found dead in his Lamesa home, ask anyone with information to please come forward. Dawson County authorities are investigating the city's first homicide since 2007.

"For someone to do what they did to him is unbelievable to my family and to the community which we live in," said Candy Hunter.

Willie Butler's nieces, Hunter and Yolanda Phillips, say they were trying to get in touch with Butler for a couple days, and never heard back from him. Family members stopped by his house, and found Butler unresponsive on the floor, and called 911.

Lamesa Police Chief Richard Garcia says his detectives immediately suspected foul play after entering Butler's house Monday. "The individual received numerous strikes to the head. Based on the appearance of the body, and I couldn't testify this in court, but it appeared to have been deceased a couple of days," stated Garcia.

Lamesa Police are taking the lead on the investigation with help from the Texas Rangers and the Dawson County District Attorney's Office Tuesday afternoon, Chief Garcia classified the investigation as a homicide and detectives were back at the crime scene, nearly a day after the body was discovered, collecting more evidence.

"I couldn't believe it was true," Manuel said.

Long-time friend Michael Manuel says he and Butler played dominoes and were neighbors. "Willy was a good guy and I don't see why anyone would hurt him, that's my opinion," Manuel said.

Family and friends say Butler could be found sitting on his front porch. "Uncle Willy was a happy person he never bothered anyone and minded his own business. He's just truly going to be missed," added Hunter.

The crime tape from Butler's front porch was removed Tuesday afternoon leaving investigators still searching for who committed this crime and family members asking why someone did this. If you have any information please call the Dawson County Crime Line at 806-872-TIPS.
