Consider This...Lubbock's airport crisis

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - What a huge mess we've had at the Lubbock airport this past week.  Apparently a telephone poll and some transmitters in the area were causing interference with the system used to land planes during bad weather. That forced lots of cancellations and delays. And although I'm thankful the problem is fixed, I'm frustrated it took a full week.

In my opinion this was a slow reaction to an emergency situation.  It disrupted the lives of thousands of travelers, cost our city thousands of dollars, and damaged Lubbock's reputation. So who's to blame? Well Lubbock was blaming the FAA and the FAA was blaming Lubbock. Meanwhile, all those travelers and Lubbock tax payers were caught in the middle.

Consider this: The airport director himself said he had never seen anything like this in his many years in aviation. That statement coupled with the sheer number of people affected should have had our city leaders raising heck. The only person I saw engaged publicly was Congressman Randy Neugebauer.

Regardless of the source of the problem, why weren't elected officials and the city manager holding public briefings at the airport every morning and demanding answers….and a quick fix?  Then at the very least the perception would have been that there was genuine concern for the thousands of folks affected.

I realize hindsight is 20/20. But come on, too many people were affected by this for our city leaders not to be front and center.
