You should begin preparations now!
- Learn the dangers and symptoms of heat disorders.
- Make sure that your air conditioning units are working properly.
If you have a window unit: - Turn it on and run if to make sure that it is cooling adequately.
- Close any floor heat registers nearby.
- Insulate spaces around air conditioners for a tighter fit.
- Use a circulating or box fan to spread the cool air.
If you have central air conditioning: - Turn it on and run if to make sure that it is cooling adequately.
- Check air-conditioning ducts for proper insulation.
- Keep heat outside and cool air inside.
- Install temporary reflectors, such as aluminum foil covered cardboard, to reflect heat back outside.
- Keep cool air inside by installing weather-stripping on your doors and windowsills.
- Consider keeping storm windows up all year. Storm windows can keep heat out of your home in the summer and cold out of your home in the winter.
