I would like to thank Mr. Jackson for his words in support of Mike Leach. I wholeheartedly support efforts to keep coach Leach in Lubbock and I think Jackson's arguments for accomplishing that are sound. I sincerely hope that the chancellor and the board of regents can see through all the muck and simply look at the ramifications of losing such an iconic coach. Let's examine what Mike Leach has done at Texas Tech:

1. Mike Leach has taken Texas Tech Football from mediocrity to national prominence

2. Mike Leach is 7 games away from being the school's all-time wins leader. (He will have done that in 10 years where it took Spike Dykes 13 years to achieve the record)

3. Texas Tech's graduation rate is near the best in the country. This is remarkable considering the cloud of academic probation that hung over the program when he arrived.

4. The 5 bowl wins under Leach equals the school's previous mark since football started in the 1930's.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. Coach Leach has accomplished more than many thought possible. Just a couple of months ago, this team was 10-0, ranked #2 in the nation and was the national media darling.

Fast forward to this week.

Texas Tech has been lambasted nationally by countless newspapers, television and radio stations.

Which of these situations would Texas Tech prefer?

For me, the choice is easy. It is obvious that having Mike at Texas Tech has been excellent for the university and for the fans. Mike wants to stay here-- under a contract that's fair to all parties. Chancellor Hance, please re-open negotiations so that our university is not further damaged by this unfortunate stalemate.

Viewer 2

You hit the nail on the head - fire Myers and keep Leach!

Viewer 3

I could not agree more with your piece about Leach's contract.  I would hate for us to relive the days of Rex Dockery, Jerry Moore, David McWilliams, or Spike Dykes.  It is amazing how people forget where this program has been.  It was not long ago that Jones Stadium only sold out of UT and A&M games and those games had more orange and maroon in the stands than red and black.  I hope that our administration comes to their senses and gets this issue resolved quickly.  It is about time that Tech presents Leach with a contract that is fair and consistent with other coaches in our conference.

Viewer 4

They need to get rid of Gerald Myers and get a new athletic director first!

KEEP MIKE LEACH!!!!     At least he is respected, not like Bob Knight.

Viewer 5

Dan, thanks so much for your comments tonight about Gerald Myers needing to go.  Finally you said out loud what I've been thinking and saying for years.  He is an A-hole with serious control issues and needs to ride into the sunset before he takes us all down.  Thanks again for speaking for me.

Viewer 6

Dan

You said what most of the people I talk to are saying.  The opinion on Myers is that he is a bully and too stubborn to deal with a new generation of players and coaches.  I do have concerns that Tech is going to milk all of the available entertainment dollars from fan's budget to go to football i.e. the increase in ticket prices this next year.  I don't have proof but I think the other sports at Tech are losing fans because of the squeeze on their budgets especially in this tough economic times.  Who knows, if our basketball team was winning it might be different.  Just an opinion of my own but I felt compelled to let you know what I think.

Viewer 7

I agree with Dan Jackson on his consider this  IT IS WAY PAST TIME FOR GERALD MYERS TO RETIRE & THINK OF THE GOOD FOR TEXAS TECH INSTEAD OF HIS OVER INFLATED EGO. HE IS NOT THINKING OF WHAT IS GOOD FOR TECH ONLY THAT HE IS NOT IN TOTAL CONTROL OF THIS MATTER.

Viewer 8

I completely agree with Mr. Jackson.  There comes a time at every university when they have to decide to move on with the times.  Gerald Meyers has shown that he is incapable of doing so and will only drag Tech down when we have the amazing opportunity to rise into a powerhouse.  Mike Leach is the future and it is time to give him the support and distinction that he has rightfully earned.  Lets not allow one small male ego to destroy everything that has been built not only by Leach, but also by the administration, the players, and all of the Tech football fans.  Wreck em Tech!!

Viewer 9

Good morning.

I live in Denton, TX and do not get to watch KCBD news on TV.  Is there a newsletter or some type of e-mail notification that I can sign up for in order to receive the weekly "Consider this by Dan Jackson"?

I love the one this week on coach Leach, WAY TO GO DAN!!!

Thanks.

From down here in Austin it looks to me like GM isn't taking care of business.  Regardless of Coach Leach's quirks and maybe mistakes by his agents, it is the AD's job to keep the best coach available employed.  Evidently we may be in jeopardy of losing Coach Leach tomorrow.  If that happens, I fear that TTU will have fired the wrong individual in the theatre and that we may very well plunge into another abyss of mediocrity for ten years.  It will be shameful if that happens.

Thank you.

Viewer 2

I am sorry. I was a long time supporter of Gerald Myers. He is a long standing member of the Tahoka Yellow Dog Club. He even brought the entire Basketball team to my father in laws funeral in 1989. But the way he treated Rob Evans and later James Dickey, I lost total respect. Do not let him treat Leach like the rest. We will lose attendance and have even higher ticket prices. More than likely a 6-5 season will be our norm. Lets stop the rumors about Art Briles coming to Lubbock, lets give Leach a decent contract.

Viewer 3

Get it done is right!

Myers has gotten his feelings hurt over the Washington interview, and now he's trying to assert his power.  Get over it!

Tech wants to be considered a "big boy" in the Big XII, and wants to give contracts out with big dollars, but with terms that East Northeast Slippery Rock State's coaches wouldn't agree to.

My proposal:

Financial terms are agreed upon.

Buyout:  If Leach leaves on his own, $500,000 buyout if he leaves prior to January 20.  $500,000 + $200,000 per remaining year on his contract if after Jan 20.  (To solidify recruiting commitments)

If Tech forces Leach out, 50% of his remaining contract is guaranteed, unless it is due to a major NCAA rules infraction, then the buyout become 10%.  If infractions are found after he leaves, Leach must pay back the 40%.

Leach must inform the university before speaking with any other university about a coaching position.  (general courtesy, and to appease Major General Myers and his ego)

Leach keeps rights to his image, voice, speaking fees, etc.  That was just ridiculous from the start.

Seems agreeable to me.  Let's get it done.  And by the way, my agent rate is cheaper than IMG.  I just want you to donate .005 of your annual salary to the charity of my choice each year!

Viewer 4

Thanks for you comments last night, I do not think any individual is worth the kind of money coaches are paid, but any are Mike Leach is one of them.  He has had Tech football and Texas Tech on the national scene for years, including 60 Minutes.  Gerald Myers has done nothing but hinder Leach. Would you like it if someone had the power to sell your image or tell you, you cannot look at other opportunity, no.  The big question is what can we do to keep Leach and get rid of Meyers?

Viewer 5

I agree! It's time for Myers to leave. He is doing more harm than good for Tech. As a Tech supporter, it's time for a AD change, not a coaching change!

Viewer 6

Mr. Jackson,

I fully agree with you thoughts on this mater.  I'm glad someone finally took it to Gerald Myres,

Thanks

Viewer 7

Well said Mr. Jackson

Viewer 8

Dan Jackson,

You have hit the nail on the head perfectly about our Coach Leach and Gerald Myers.  Thank you so much for taking a public stand.  Kent (Hance) can solve this matter if only he will.  I know Coach Leach has not been perfect in this matter, but Gerald has been undercutting our coach both publicly and privately pretty much from the beginning.  If I had been Coach Leach I would have lost it long ago!  Thank you so much for taking a stand!!!  You can use my name anywhere and anytime.  I stand with you and your statement tonight!

Viewer 9

You are right on about Coach Leach.

Viewer 10

I'm glad that you commented on  Mike Leach's contract controversy.  I think Gerald Myers should have been reprimanded for his comments about not caring if Leach signed the contract which made the news during football season.  Gerald Myers needs to be more professional.

Viewer 11

Gerald Myers has long ago outlived his usefulness as AD at TTU. How thoroughly hypocritical for him to totally support a non-respectable adolescent acting Cretan like Bob Knight , simply because they are friends from the 'good ol' boy days' and he was half scared of him, but he won't stand up for a real winning coach? Whether he is particularly likeable or not, I don't recall Mike Leach ever being the kind of shameful embarrass-ment to his family, this city, or the university that Bob Knight, a much older (and should be wiser) man , was in far less time on the job. What a disgrace Gerald now has become to this city and TTU because of how far he had his nose stuck in unsavory places belonging to unsavory people. His love affair with Bob Knight and whatever it was he thought he brought to TTU was disgusting.

Viewer 12

This entire discussion over one person, however important many may think he is, embarrasses me when when there are a very large number of TAs at Tech who are not getting paid at all.  You should really look into this, apparently Tech has had trouble with its payroll to the point that many TAs have not been paid at all this entire semester.  I sure don't see anyone standing up for these people who all combined do not make what the head coach makes in a month.

Thank you for considering this,

Viewer 13

Dan,

You are the first man with the guts to tell the truth.  Amen brother.  Fire Myers as you said and have Hance and the regents sit with Leach and work this thing out.  This is total insanity of over inflated egos on all sides.

Myers body language no more wants to keep Coach Leach than a snake.

If Hance can't see that firing Leach is a BIG mistake then it is time to replace him.  After all Leach has lived through 3 chancelors and 3-4 presidents with one very old, aging athletic director for 9 years

Preach on.  You should repeat that every chance you get.

Viewer 14

Very good piece, and well said. please keep the pressure on the powers that be for those of us who have none. We are tired of the good ol boy bull. Some of us would rather continue winning rather than contuing to flex our authority. ...Myers speaks for himself not TEXAS TECH. Finally someone said it. Please use your power to begin petition.

Viewer 15

Thanks for tonights Consider This. We need someone with the backbone to stand up to Myers ego.

Viewer 16

I was very pleased to hear your opinion on Consider This.  My husband and I agree with you completely.  Texas Tech football is more fun that it has ever been!  I am totally embarassed to keep hearing announcers on ESPN almost laughing out loud that we are trying to run off the national coach of the year.  Gerald Myers has completely let his own personal feelings get in the way of doing what is best for Texas Tech.  I'm glad that you had to courage to say that it is time for him to go.  Let's keep trying to keep Leach as long as we possibly can!

Viewer 17

The athletic dept not cares about keeping a coach, but has screwed the average fan.  I have had season tickets when we had trouble beating North Texas, SMU, TCU and Baylor.  The program starts winning, I get priced out of tickets.  If the program takes a downturn, I'm still priced out of a ticket.  They could end up like the basket ball programs, tickets sold but no butts in the seats.

Viewer 18

I'm right in there with Dan.  I have said many times over to get rid of Gerald Myers.  What has he done for Tech Athletics, nothing in my opinion, he should have been gone years ago.  Mike Leach has won three (3) Coach of the Year awards this year alone, doesn't that tell Tech and the Board of Regents something?

Now take a look at Mike Leach, look what he has done for Tech Football since he has been here, every year gets better and better.  He has virtually put Tech and Lubbock on the map with his great coaching ability, his love of the game and his love for his team.  In this last year, I've have seen billboards in Dallas and surrounding suburbs recognizing Texas Tech do you honestly think that Mike Leach's talent in bringing a winning team together didn't have something to do with that?

Agree to the contract that has been put before you by Coach Leach and his agents and let's get on with the program before we lose him and the ability to draw quality recruits to Texas Tech.

Viewer 19

We need Coach Leach!! thanks Mr. Myers, but it is time for u to go!!!!

Viewer 20

fire Meyers and Hance

Viewer 21

DEAR MR. JACKSON:

I THOUGHT YOU WERE RIGHT ON IN YOUR COMMENTS LAST NIGHT ABOUT THE SITUATION AT TECH.  WHAT WE HAVE ARE 2 INDIVIDUALS WHOSE EGOS ARE TOO BIG FOR THEIR BRITCHES.  I'VE NEVER CARED FOR GERALD MYERS.  HE RAN THE BASKETBALL PROGRAM IN THE GROUND AND THEN WAS MOVED TO ADMINISTRATION.  THEN HE GOT THE A.D. JOB WHEN T. JONES RETIRED.  WHAT HAS GERALD DONE FOR TECH?  LET'S SEE.  HE BROUGHT IN BOB KNIGHT SO HE COULD SET THE RECORD FOR THE MOST MEN'S TEAM AND THEN NAMED PAT KNIGHT, HEAD COACH IN WAITING.  WHAT I THINK HE SHOULD HAVE DONE WAS TO DO A COACHING SEARCH AND IF PAT KNIGHT WAS THE BEST COACH AVAILABLE, THEN HIRE HIM THEN FOR THE HEAD COACHING POSITION.  I WANT TO KNOW WHY HE DIDN'T EVEN LOOK AT NOLAN RICHARDSON.  I KNOW RICHARDSON HAD SOME PROBLEMS AT ARKANSAS BUT HE DID WIN A NATIONAL TITLE THERE.  I DON'T KNOW WHERE HE IS AT, BUT I WOULD HAVE AT LEAST INTERVIEWED HIM.  MYERS LET MARSHA SHARP OVERSTAY HER WELCOME AS WELL AND NAMED KRISTI CURRY AS HER REPLACEMENT.  NOW LOOK AT BOTH PROGRAMS.  TO SAY THAT FAN SUPPORT IS AT AN ALL TIME LOW WOULD BE MOSTLY CORRECT.  THE U.S. ARENA IS NOW MOSTLY A TOMB.  PSL OWNERS LIKE MYSELF ARE NOT RENEWING DUE TO THE PITIFUL SHAPE OF BOTH TEAMS AND ALSO THE FACT THAT THE BOREN STAFF ARE NOT CHECKING TICKETS AND LETTING EVERYONE SIT ANYWHERE THEY WANT TO ON BASICALLY A GENERAL ADMISSION FORMAT.  I KNOW MANY PSL HOLDERS WHO ARE MAD ABOUT THAT.  I HAVE A FRIEND OF MINE FROM BROWNFIELD WHO BUYS A GENERAL ADMISSION TICKET AND THEN SITS ON THE 3 RD ROW.  HOW DO I KNOW THIS?  BECAUSE MY PSL SEATS ARE 10 ROWS ABOVE HIM AND I'VE PAID A FORTUNE TO SIT WHERE I'M SITTING AND HE PAYS VIRTUALLY NOTHING AND SITS ON THE 3 RD ROW.  I'M NOT MAD AT HIM, HE'S ONLY TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE SITUATION.  SO NEXT YEAR, I'LL NOT BUY SEASON TICKETS BECAUSE I'M FROM OUT OF TOWN AND NOW I'LL ATTEND ONLY THE GAMES I WANT TO WATCH.

NOW HERE IS MY THOUGHT ON LEACH.  HE IS 76-39 IN NINE YEARS AT TECH.  HE HASN'T WON A CHAMPIONSHIP ALTHOUGH HE DID TIE FOR THE SOUTH DIVISION TITLE.  HIS TEAMS ALL LOOK ALIKE,  ALL OFFENSE, NO DEFENSE AND HORRIBLE SPECIAL TEAMS.  THE ONLY THING HOLDING LEACH ABOVE THE WATER IS HIS OFFENSE.  HIS AGENTS MUST BE LIKE SCOTT BORIS, THE PROFESSIONAL AGENT, WHO CAUSES MAJOR LEAGUE TEAMS ACROSS THE BOARD ABSOLUTE HELL IN THE WAY HE NEGOTIATES FOR HIS CLIENTS.   HIS AGENTS WENT AROUND MYERS AND HANCE'S BACK TO TRY TO GET A DEAL DONE.  THEN SOMEONE HIRES SOMEONE FROM LUBBOCK TO HOLD A (expletive) PEP RALLY AT RAIDERVILLE.  THIS CONTRACT NOT GETTING DONE HAS TECH LOOKING LIKE THE LAUGHING STOCK OF THE BIG 12 AND ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL.  I CALLED SPORTS TALK YESTERDAY AND SAID THAT LEACH WOULD PROBABLY FIRED BECAUSE RECRUITING IS THE LIFE BLOOD OF ALL COLLEGIATE SPORTS AND HE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO RECRUIT WITH HIS CONTRACT STATUS.  LEACH KNOWS THAT HE WILL BE BOUGHT OUT.  HE KNOWS THAT THERE IS NO WAY HE WILL SERVE OUT THE CONTRACT.  I TOLD SPORTS TALK THAT MYERS SHOULD BE FIRED AT THE SAME BOARD OF REGENTS MEETING DUE TO THE WAY THIS CONTRACT MESS WAS AIRED IN THE MEDIA.  EVERYONE IS PISSED OFF, ME INCLUDED.  THIS CONTRACT SHOULD HAVE BEEN WORKED OUT.  LEACH OBVIOUSLY DOESN'T WANT TO BE HERE OR HE WOULD HAVE GONE INTO KING GERALD'S OFFICE AND SAID LET'S WORK THIS OUT.  PUDGE RODRIQUEZ DID THE SAME THING WITH THE RANGERS WHEN HE PLAYED FOR THEM.  LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

Viewer 22

Good GRIEF, what is the matter that the powers that be can't or won't do what they very obviously NEED to do in order to insure that Coach Leach stays here at Tech ... It is unbelieveable that it has come to the point of a possibility of our losing Mike Leach !!   I totally and completely agree that it's time for Gerald Myers to retire or move on or whatever and get someone else in that position who has some SENSE !!! ...  The economy here in Lubbock received a huge boost as a result of Tech's EXCITING football season, and we cannot afford to lose Mike Leach for many reasons ...  I have never been much of a regular football fan ...  I majored in music many years ago, and have just never been interested in football until the last couple of years ...  Now, I'm a died in the wool Tech fan all the WAY ...  I have just LOVED watching the exciting games that Coach Leach has given us, and, as I'm disabled and pretty much homebound,  those football games have made an enormous difference in my days ...  I am excited and anticipating another great, exciting year and can't WAIT for the football season to start ! ...  I have heard by the grapevine that there are many players who have chosen to come to Tech next year just because of Mike Leach's program ...    Please PLEASE keep this going, make lots of noise and do all that you can to ensure that Mike Leach stays here at Tech and gets the respect he deserves ...  I don't know a lot about all the ins and outs of politics at Texas Tech Atletics, but, just from what I have gleaned, it seems to me that, should it come to a show down between Leach and Myers, there should be NO contest !! ...  Perhaps you could organize the Lubbock merchants and get their support and let them vocalize how much difference the excitment generated by these past few football seasons have made to them ...   And, if I could do anything on the phone for you to help in any way, I would be very happy to do what I could ...  Thanks so much, Dan, for all your views and for sounding off on so many subjects that need to be aired, and this one is one of the most important to the future of Texas Tech and Lubbock ...

Viewer 23

Commentary on a highly visible forum from someone who I hope knows all the facts.  You exercised a powerful tool.

I wonder how your business negotiations would grade out regarding valuable employees with leverage.

Something I would believe you don't deal with much if at all.  I believe your one sided commentary was inappropriate.

Viewer 24

Dan,

You were right on with your commentary regarding Coach Leach.  We had the best season in history, the play of the year and we were on television nearly every week.  There was a record set for season tickets sold and I don't remember ever having as many sold out out games as we had.  We have the greatest show on turf every saturday at the Jones.  I think we need a new AD.  Even Coach Knight told America on Game Day that Tech was the perfect place for Coach Leach and he was the perfect Coach for Tech.

The most important thing that I think Coach Leach has done is make sure that we have one of the best graduation rates in the Big 12.  We have had quality young men with character to represent us and that is very important.

If you treat a coach who has done what Coach Leach has done this way, you sure aren't going to have a very good track record when you go the hire a new coach.

Viewer 25

Hey Dan,

This appears to be purley political.  How many years did Leach hang around being paid less than average for a coach in this caliber school?  Are his request totally unresonable?(particularly the 4.5 mil payday if he is fired first year of the new contract).  How does baylors coach tie into this--- It is my understanding his contract has signifigantly less penalty for leaving to Tech than any other school?   How did this happen or is it just coincidence?  I am no authority by any means-- however it appears that we are starting to smell what Meyers and the regents have been planning.

Just my opinion.

Viewer 26

I think that there is blame on both sides.  However, with ticket prices going up and the new addition on the East side to start construction, and the talk about doing the South end zone to make it a bowl someday, I don't think I would throw my paycheck out the window.

True, Maybe Gerald Myers service to Tech should end.  He has accomplished a lot for Tech, but his days should be numbered as AD not Leach's as coach.

Keep Leach and get Tech up in the Big 12 and in the nation.  Who does Myers think that he can hire to put "butts" in the stands.

Viewer 27

I completely agree.  We need to keep Coach Leach and Gerald Myers needs to go.

Viewer 28

Both Texas Tech and the Mike Leach camp have valid arguments about this debacle.  From what I understand, salary isn't an issue, and it shouldn't be; over $2.5 million per year to coach football at ANY level should be sufficient.  But with respect to the four primary points of argument, Tech wins half and Leach wins half.

Honestly, if Tech is willing to shell out $12.7 million to secure arguably the most popular coach in the history of our football program, it's not unfair for them to require notification before Leach interviews at another school.  It actually seems like that would just be common courtesy.  Additionally, why is Leach bickering over the buyout; e.g., how much money it would cost him should he decide to terminate his contract early?  Why doesn't Texas Tech simply begin searching for a coach who will be happy just to be here without requiring a "jump-ship" clause the first time the grass looks greener elsewhere?  Besides, I believe Tech's offer is quite reasonable considering that Leach has yet to prove he can win the big games; Tech is 4-14 combined in the Leach era against Texas and Oklahoma (only one win on the road), and unimpressive in bowl games for several years now, considering that the Insight and Gator bowls were last-second wins against unimpressive teams sandwiched between Cotton Bowl losses.

Before you start carrying torches to my front door, Tech should bend some as well.  I wrote earlier that Leach shares blame for requiring a fancy buyout clause; well, Tech is doing the same thing by arguing over the amount of money they would have to cough up in the event Leach's contract was terminated early.  Just like Leach should be loyal to Tech, Tech should make Leach feel like he's the man for the job, hands down.  In my opinion, and I've written exactly zero coaching contracts, it seems like that would start by not focusing on giving yourself ways out of a commitment with your coach.  I know that language is built into every contract, but it needn't be the focal point it has become.  Also, Texas Tech is being ridiculous by demanding to use Leach's likeness on products and memorabilia.  Sure, it would bring more money to the University as an officially-licensed product, but when students, alumni and other Tech faithful already pay close to $30 for a gray T-shirt with a double T on the chest JUST to support our school, I doubt Tech's hurting too badly.  Leach is completely in the right to refuse to allow Tech to plaster his name and/or face all over shirts, hats, bumper stickers, etc.  Who knows where it would end.

I hope this impasse is resolved in good time.  In spite of limited success against the Big 12 south powers, it's hard to argue that Tech has enjoyed unparalleled success under Mike Leach.  It's in the University's best interest to keep him around, and it seems like it's in the coach's best interest to stay.  Other big-name schools had vacancies this season (Tennessee, Clemson), but those are nationally-recognized powerhouses, schools at which Mike Leach would just be the coach.  Here at Texas Tech where, quite honestly, we're not used to all this success, Leach is elevated to something of a football deity.  I can't imagine either side letting a relationship like that dissipate and vanish.  Here's hoping they figure something out, and soon.

Viewer 29

Thank you for last night's (Tuesday, 2/17) commentary.

Unfortunately, many people on the South Plains and especially the A-J tend to "censor" opinions such as mine over this.  2 of my posts on redraiders.com was removed when I wanted Myers, Hance, Leach, Bailey, and the Regents removed because of the contract dispute.  I feel the Tech administration is so disconnected from the public currently that I feel an investigation by either the Texas Rangers police force or the FBI is warranted for possible corruption and conspiracy.

I also HATE what people supporting other universities laugh at Tech about!

I feel that the Regents' job is to oversee that the university operates at its best at all times in all facets in and out of the classroom and to take over the AD's, Chancellor's, and President's jobs when those people FAIL to do them properly.

A recent response to a question I sent to Chancellor Hance was in the form of "Texas Tech is a learning institution" and "Leach would not deal with us personally by forwarding us to his agents" (translation of his reply).

President Bailey owes another professor $175,000 for destroying that professor's work and yet preaches about integrity.

If the Regents are getting mad because IMG wants to get a deal done, then, those people need to go too.

If Governor Perry has his "dirty, little mitts" in this (he appoints them), I'll vote for Kay Bailey Hutchison for Governor should she run.

I fear we may have a riot about to happen at Tech should cooler heads not prevail.

I just hope Coach Leach can find some way to avoid the Regents' meeting or be able to temporarily enjoin them from firing him.

Viewer 30

Gerald Meyers needs to leave the football program alone & worry about getting the Tech Basketball program on the same winning level as the football program.

Viewer 31

I agree with you.  Kent Hance and Coach Leach should get together and work out the contract and then do a good ole West Texas handshake.  That would certainly take care of all the squabbling and remove the middle people.  I hope times haven't passed and the handshake is better than a contract.

That is my take on all of it.

Viewer 32

I agree 100% with this commentary.  How does your average contract negotiation end up in a possible firing of one of the best coaches in Tech history?  Leach does not want to sign the extension so the board of regents may consider firing him??  This is insane!!  I love my school but this is embarrassing. If you fire Leach what coach would want to work for Gerald Myers? What parent would want to send their son to Tech to play football in this chaos?

I know there are some hurt feelings regarding Leach and loyalty because he interviewed for other jobs, but where is the loyalty for Leach.  I sat in my season ticketed seat in Section 118 on Nov. 1st with my UT alumni husband for the best TECH game of my life last season.  Have we already forgotten the ESPN game changing moment??  Hey Gerald Myers, Coach Leach was the head coach that night!

Please Chancellor Hance, step up and show some leadership during this situation.  Thanks for letting me view my opinion.

Viewer 33

I concur with your views on the mess at Tech.  We finally have a coach who received national recognition for his ability as a coach (also, he is a scholar and such a good example for the students at Tech) and Gerald Myers and Chancellor Kent Hance are treating him badly.  If this treatment of a fine, successful coach continues, Tech will never be taken seriously in athletics.

What other sport has done as well as our football program in the past 15 years--none!  I watched the interview on 60 minutes in January and we should all be proud of the respect Coach Leach receives from around the country.  The interviewer made it plain that Coach Leach's method of coaching has influenced football coaching in the university setting as well as the professional setting.  It's too bad he does not get the same respect from our officials at Tech.

All Gerald Myers can see if the almighty dollar and building his little empire.  He would send our football games to Dallas in an instant if he could get away with it.  Ofcourse, he does not have any trouble seeing the games in Dallas because we taxpayers pick up the tab so he can go anywhere he wants.  Those of us who support Tech, both at athletic events and the tuition we pay, have a right to expect the university to keep the games here so we can go see our football team play.

If Gerald Myers and Kent Hance succeed in getting rid of Leach, it will be a huge blow to our athletic program.  I feel that we need to get rid of Gerald Myers and get some-one in that office who will try to elevate our stature in the state.  I'm sure other universities will rush to grab Coach Leach as soon as they can.

I was embarrassed when we hired Bob Knight and he continued to throw temper tantrums, kick signs in the Arena, and use language that belonged in the gutter.  I didn't see Gerald Myers saying one word about that.  The reason given for putting up with this unprofessional behavior was that he was a great coach.  Well--Coach Leach is also a great coach AND we don't have to apologize for his behavior.

How many of our coaches (with the exception of Marsha Sharp) are thought of as highly as Coach Leach?  This is the type coach we need to get first rate recruits for our athletic programs.

Viewer 34

I agree,,, Meyers needs to follow his own actions. He has never had a problem asking other coaches to step down when they were not getting the job done,,,so now he needs to step down and let someone in there that can get the job done,,,,OR,,DOES HE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH TEXAS TECH,,THE FOOTBALL TEAM ,,THE FANS AND LUBBOCK ALL WINNING FROM KEEPING COACH LEACH,

Viewer 35

Dan, you're a smart guy.  So I'm surprised that you don't recognize that the problem holding up the current negotiations is not Mike Leach vs. Gerald Myers.  Leach's problem is that he's gotten himself crossways with Kent Hance, Guy Bailey, and a significant number of the Tech Board of Regents.

If you truly believe that Leach should stay, and his enemies go, then you should be calling for the resignation of Hance, Bailey, and the BOR.  Myers is just the bag man in this entire spectacle.

Viewer 36

I agree Myers needs to be fired.

Viewer 37

Gerald and Ken should be tarred, feather and rode out of Lubbock County on a rail.

Gerald wants to be a big shot and he is nothing but a has been. He's to old and dumb be a MAJOR University AD

If Leach goes then there no more trips back to the Hub City for this ex-student

Viewer 38

Myers has never like anyone stealing the limelight of his little show. Leach has stolen it. Myers is an egotistic person and always has been. Keeping Myers around will only make it more difficult to hire a talented coach in any sport at Tech. When Myers was a coach, he was nothing more than mediocre at best and always a showboater to gather attention to himself. He treats everyone with disrespect and should be fired.

Viewer 39

Great job Dan. Keep the heat on Myers, he needs to be gone, pronto.

Viewer 40

Meyers is a dinosaur.  Needs to be gone.  Leach needs to be fair and compromise that if he wants to go

during his contract term he should pay similar to what the University must pay if they decide to sever relations.

Viewer 41

Dan,
usually your pretty spot-on with your comments..but not this time..
If Mike Leach REALLY wanted to stay at Tech..He would not have been looking at Washington while he should have been preparing for Mississippi...a game we were embarrassed. In fact, Leach has made it clear..he is bigger than the university.

If he wants Bob Stoops or Mack Brown money..then win a national title or at least a Big XII title.. What did Leach do down the stretch at Tech this past season..

Lose big to Oklahoma...Win ugly against Baylor..and get blown out by Mississippi..

I say...safe some money..Let Leach and Myers both go..

Fire Coach Knight...after all.... His father slammed Tech again..saying we can't get people to Lubbock cause of the city has nothing to offer kids,...

I say...cancel all sports programs..buy more red light cameras...and open another silent wings museum that bring in 20-30 bucks a year...

Sign a long term agreement with Buddy Holly widow that wont bring visitors to town..

Then you really have something going..

Viewer 42

YES IT'S TIME TO GET A NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. COACH HAS DONE A LOT FOR LUBBOCK AND TEXAS TECH.  MYERS IS VERY NEGATIVE. HE HAS TO HAVE HIS WAY ALL THE TIME.

If he cannot agree to the contract, he is not here for the right reasons. Let Him Go.

What happen with the OU game, if he says the players did not perform, the players are the ones who won all the other games, they are the ones in uniform not Mike Leach.

Viewer 44

I agree with you about Gerald Myers.  He should have retired a long time ago.

Viewer 45

I think you are right about Gerald Myers.  It is time for him to say GOODBYE for the benefit of Tech and Lubbock.  He thinks he can do and say about anything!  I think he needs to go not Mike Leach.

Viewer 46

I think that it is time that the texas tech A.D. move out of Lubbock and the regents put someone else in the A.D. office that can do a better job.Coach Leach is the man for  tech to have as our Football Head Coach.

Gerald Myers; What has he done for Tech and the Athletics. He may be part of the GOOD OLD BOYS Network.Well,I do not have too much to say about our

A.D. AT Tech. Why,Because he should retire and move  out of Lubbock.

Viewer 47

Way to go Dan!  Its about time someone spoke up that Gerald Meyers has outlived his usefullness to Texas Tech.  We need an AD who supports ALL of the ahtletic programs at Tech.  He's run our basketball programs into the ground and looks like he wants to do the same to football, all the time while raising our fb ticket prices!  Egomaniac Meyers needs to go!!

Viewer 48

Finally!!!!  Thank you so much for tonight's consider this. It is more than time to say goodbye to Gerald Meyers. He seems fine with ancient policies and sports trends of mediocrity. I am tired of Tech being a great mediocre team. We now have a tremendous opportunity to become a national threat and to put Texas Tech in a great light. Let's keep Leach and lose Meyers.

Viewer 49

You got it right......KEEP LEACH.....goodbye Gerald Myers!

Viewer 50

Mr. Jackson,

I saw your commentary tonight on the 6:00 pm news.  I am definately not a fan of our current athletic director, but I think you are not giving him a fair shake.  Gerald Myers is not negotiating the contract extension.  Chancellor Kent Hance is the man in charge of that responsibility.  I think there is plenty of blame on both sides for the lack of a signed agreement.  You trying to lay the blame at the feet of Mr. Myers solely is incorrect and borders on being irresponsible or even spiteful.  It seems as though maybe you have an agenda of your own.

Viewer 51

I SINCERELY THINK TEXAS TECH SHOULD SUPPORT COACH LEACH.

I SERIOUSLY DOUBT OTHER COLLEGES HAVE THE SAME STIPULATIONS IN THEIR COACHES CONTRACTS AS TECH IS PUTTING ON COACH LEACH.

MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE 3 CHILDREN THAT HAVE ATTENDED TECH AND HAVE BEEN SEASON TICKET HOLDERS FOR 8 YEARS NOW, WE LOVE ATTENDING THE GAMES AND SUPPORTING LEACH AND THE PLAYERS.

IT'S A SHAME THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND CHANCELLOR KENT HANCE CAN'T DO THE SAME.

Viewer 52

Can someone please fire Gerald Myers???

Geez Louise...its almost like Gerald Myers wants to get rid of Coach Leach, with these ridiculous terms!!! At the rate that Texas Tech goes through Chancellor's...I think Leach should hold out and stand his ground, cause in another 2 years, Texas Tech will have yet another new Chancellor and hopefully smarten up and get rid of Myers once and for all....I mean really, how long has Gerald Myers been Athletic Director....since the Texas Tech Polo team was riding around on dinosaurs!!!

Give it up already....its the dawn of a new generation...and Leach is not just a football coach, he is an artist...A PIRATE!!!!! What they are asking from Leach is like identity theft or legal prostitution!!!

Instead of Kent Hance stubbornly saying that he is only looking at what is good for West Texas and Texas Tech, maybe he and the rest of the Board of Regents should look outside their cushy, little, leather-bound and gold encrusted boxes and finally see...not what, but who has already done greatness for Tech!!!
Cause, I sure as hell didn't see Kent Hance or Gerald Myers on 60 minutes giving Texas Tech one of the best endorsement's I've ever seen in Texas Tech Football History!!!

By the way, what is the deal with the fat cats in the LBK pushing away anything good that has ever came out of that town, really....from not allowing the town to sell alcohol in the city limits, to ostracizing Buddy Holly, boycotting Natalie Maines and now Mike Leach...maybe Mac Davis was right....
"Happiness is Lubbock, Tx....in my rear view mirror!!!!!!

Peace, Love and Save Coach Leach!!!!

Viewer 53

I have been a scholarship donor to the Red Raider Club for years.  If Myers stays and Leach goes so do I.

Viewer 54

Agree with your comments 100%...  Its way past time for Meyers to move on, and I hope the Chancellor takes your advice... How this turns out will define Texas Tech in more ways than just athletics for years to come...

Viewer 55

Mr. Jackson,

Well said.  We are in 100% agreement with you.  Why in the world would we want to get rid of the best coach Tech has ever had. The day Meyers is asked to leave he needs to go to the USA and take down his personal banner that he had put up.  He hasn't won a national championship in any sport and all athletic teams at Tech are struggling except football and track.

Viewer 56

Seems like 99% of the responses are one sided...don't see my response and are we only showing sides that agree with the commentary...?

Thanks Dan and usually I agree with you...but not this time.

Viewer 57

I say Fire TSO!!! Time to move on!

Viewer 58

I am a loyal supporter of my school and I am proud to be a Red Raider alum. However I am disgusted that we could possibly lose the best coach that Tech has ever had because of personal feelings from Gerald Myers. I think that both sides are at fault in some way shape or form but Texas Tech needs Mike Leach to stay in Lubbock to keep our program strong and keep the fire stoked to bring in more money for the entire university.

If these negotiations fall through and Leach is let go I for one will boycott anything to do with Gerald Myers and our university and I will no longer support my school until Gerald Myers calls it quits or is let go. I am truly a die hard but this whole situation makes me hate one of the things that I love most.

Viewer 59

Myers should have been fired years ago;  he has no loyalty to Tech or Lubbock either. Remember the times he has tried to move football games to Dallas?  Remember the time he refused to let Coach Leach send out recruitment letters because Leach's budget was slightly overdrawn?  No first-rate coach will want to come to Tech after the way Leach has been treated.

Viewer 60

Concerning Mike Leach's contract.  I think the Texas Tech Board of Regents should look into replacing Gerald Myers, not Mike Leach.  Mike has done more for TTU sports than anyone else in many years.  Not since Donnie Anderson went to Green Bay has Tech had more National attention.  They may wish to re-think whatever deal was made with Bob Knight that stuck us with Pat also, that smells of a Gerald Myers deal too.  This is just an opinion of a long time TTU fan, but if you don't believe me about Leach's reach, try googling Mike Leach and see where the articles are from.

From what I hear Mike isn't that concerned about the money, the buy out amount or wheather or not TTU would be able to fire him or not.  He just does not wish to give TTU the sole right to use his name, his likeness, or him for whatever promotion they wish to.  What it sounds like to us is that Mike has become a National personality and Gerald Myers wants to milk that cash cow.

Viewer 61

Viewer 62

You hit the nail on the head - fire Myers and keep Leach!

Viewer 63

I could not agree more with your piece about Leach's contract.  I would hate for us to relive the days of Rex Dockery, Jerry Moore, David McWilliams, or Spike Dykes.  It is amazing how people forget where this program has been.  It was not long ago that Jones Stadium only sold out of UT and A&M games and those games had more orange and maroon in the stands than red and black.  I hope that our administration comes to their senses and gets this issue resolved quickly.  It is about time that Tech presents Leach with a contract that is fair and consistent with other coaches in our conference.

Viewer 64

He's jealous and vindictive.    Mike Leach has brought Tech to new heights and should be given an extended contract just like it was.   The restrictions Tech has made are completely out of reason. They need to get rid of Gerald Myers and get a new athletic director first!

KEEP MIKE LEACH!!!!     At least he is respected, not like Bob Knight.

Viewer 65

Dan, thanks so much for your comments tonight about Gerald Myers needing to go.  Finally you said out loud what I've been thinking and saying for years.  He is an a-hole with serious control issues and needs to ride into the sunset before he takes us all down.

Viewer 66

You said what most of the people I talk to are saying.  The opinion on Myers is that he is a bully and too stubborn to deal with a new generation of players and coaches.  I do have concerns that Tech is going to milk all of the available entertainment dollars from fan's budget to go to football i.e. the increase in ticket prices this next year.  I don't have proof but I think the other sports at Tech are losing fans because of the squeeze on their budgets especially in this tough economic times.  Who knows, if our basketball team was winning it might be different.  Just an opinion of my own but I felt compelled to let you know what I think.

Viewer 67

I agree with Dan Jacjson on his consider this  IT IS WAY PAST TIME FOR GERALD MYERS TO RETIRE & THINK OF THE GOOD FOR TEXAS TECH INSTEAD OF HIS OVER INFLATED EGO. HE IS NOT THINKING FO WHAT IS GOOD FOR TECH ONLY THAT HE IS NOT IN TOTAL CONTROL OF THIS MATTER.

Viewer 68

I completely agree with Mr. Jackson.  There comes a time at every university when they have to decide to move on with the times.  Gerald Meyers has shown that he is incapable of doing so and will only drag Tech down when we have the amazing opportunity to rise into a powerhouse.  Mike Leach is the future and it is time to give him the support and distinction that he has rightfully earned.  Lets not allow one small male ego to destroy everything that has been built not only by Leach, but also by the administration, the players, and all of the Tech football fans.  Wreck em Tech!!

Viewer 69

Coach Leach has made unremarkable strides in developing our football program and projecting it into the national spotlight.  As an alumni, I am outraged that Texas Tech University and Gerald Myers who I have always supported have pushed these 4 minor points this far.  As an alumni of this great university with a small voice in this matter of internal politics, I would suggest this comes to a stop now and all efforts to extend Coach Leach's contract be exhausted immediately.  I am extremely concerned that this petty attempt by Texas Tech to control Coach Leach will create an un-repairable relationship between our coach and the administration thus causing us to lose him in the near future.  Speaking from the hearts of many alumni this is something we do not and can not have happen otherwise changes in the administration and athletic department of Texas Tech University will have to be strongly taken into consideration.

Interesting webcast/video that another concerned alumni sent me per the link referencing that Mack Brown, Bob Stoops, Billy Snyder and Mark Mangino have none of those clauses.

We all Know that Mr. Myers does not like football(he is all about basketball), and right Know we need to get Coach Leach a new contract and get rid of Mr. Myers. The only Tech sport that is doing any good and drawing attention is football, the tech basketball male and female are awful and I hope the new Baseball Coach has success. Get rid of the A.D and everything else will fall into to place.  Go Tech!

Viewer 71

SIGN COACH LEACH AND GO TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Viewer 72

Thank you for you opinion on this situation.  When they had the Coach Leach Rally on Tuesday  -  I wanted my husband and myself to go  -  and take a sign that said fire Myers.  He said no.

Viewer 73

Even if there is a contract signed, there will always be friction between Leach & Myers. Leach is the best thing that has ever happened for Texas Tech Football and to let him go is ridiculous!!!! We need to say bye to Myers and the sooner the better!

Viewer 74

I can't say that I'm really too surprised to see the mess that's been made at Tech - both on the part of the administration (Hance, Myers and the BOR) and Coach Leach.  This is a good ole boy system that's lagging behind the times.  Myers is too much of a political, CYA animal to  run a quality athletics program and he really needs to retire - forcibly this year.  As for the rest of the administration, they are clueless as to what the student body wants or needs, and not just in a football coach.  They ignore the changing demographics of their student body and focus solely on the "traditional".  They may have frozen tuition, but they will nickel and dime you to death on the fees and they just keep on spending like there's no tomorrow and the bill will never come due.  As for Leach, he has been shown little respect and no loyalty in this deal, so he's just giving as good as he gets.  Too bad for the fans, the new recruits, and the current players.  Whatever happens this Friday, I have a strong suspicion that we (the fans) are going to lose.  Something stinks in Raiderland and while the world may be holding its nose from the stench, its also laughing its butt off at the rednecks in Lubbock.
