Texas Tech fires basketball coach Pat Knight

By Pete Christy - email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Red Raider Basketball Coach Pat Knight has been fired, but will coach the team at the Big 12 Tournament this week. In the 3 plus seasons he coached Tech since taking over for his father Bob Knight.  Pat Knight went 50-60 and only 16-42 in the Big 12 Conference. Knight took over after the 20th game in 2008 going 4-7.

In his first full season in 2009, Tech went 14-19 and 3-13 in conference. 2009 was his best season making a NIT run finishing 19-16. This year had high hoop hopes with a senior-laden squad, but Tech struggled to go 13-18 and 5-11 in the Big 12 to finish in a 10th place tie. Knight will coach the team in the Big 12 Championship as Tech faces Missouri 8:30 PM Wednesday night in Kansas City.

The following is a written statement released Monday from Texas Tech, after news of Knight's firing was reported.

Texas Tech Will Relieve Pat Knight of Head Coaching Duties at Season's End

Texas Tech University President Guy Bailey announced Monday that Head Men's Basketball Coach Pat Knight will be relieved of his duties at the conclusion of the season.

"I felt like it was time to make a change within our men's basketball program," Bailey said. "I appreciate everything Pat has done for our university, not only as a head coach, but also throughout his career as an assistant. I wish him success and the best moving forward."

Knight will continue to coach the team through the Big 12 Conference Championships. A national search for the position will begin immediately.
