Lewis Arraigned On Capital Murder Charge

The Louisiana man suspected of killing a Lubbock resident at his Southwest Lubbock home is now held on a $1-million bond.  Alonzo Lewis, 25, is charged with capitol murder in the death of 73-year-old Don McCullough.

Lubbock Police say the first time the two men met was most likely when McCullough offered Lewis a bottle of water Monday evening. Minutes later, Lewis returned to 8017 Vinton and allegedly attempted to steal something from the garage and attacked McCullough.

A chilling 911 call from the victim's wife brought police to Southwest Lubbock, and later to a restaurant just a block away. Investigators credit a witness with giving them the tip they needed to find Lewis.

That witness told police the man she saw had a Rosa's Cafe logo on his shirt. Police tell us without that tip; they may have still been searching for the suspect Tuesday night.

911 Operator: "9-1-1"
Mrs. McCullough: "Yes, hi 8017 Vinton Avenue.  A black man beat my husband up in the garage."

This call lead police to Southwest Lubbock.

911 Operator: "Do you know this man?"
Mrs. McCullough: "No, never saw him in my life.  He's passing around stuff.  My husband's bleeding, hurry!"

When officers arrived they found McCullough dead inside his garage.  His wife told police her husband had just returned home from running errands, when the suspect attacked him.

Officers quickly closed off the area, and began a search, utilizing dogs and the Department of Public Safety helicopter, but it was a witness who eventually led police to Rosa's Cafe and the man now charged in McCullough's murder, Alonzo Lewis.

"She gave a pretty good description of it, and so I thought the police should know about it.  She and I went out to the alley and talked to the police and that's when they responded and went over to Rosa's," neighbor Tim Blanchette said.

Rosa's management tells NewsChannel 11 Lewis worked under the name Mario Jacobs. He'd been a dishwasher at there for less than a month, and according to police he clocked into work Monday, just minutes after he allegedly stabbed McCullough.

We looked into Lewis' past, and found he and his wife has only lived in Lubbock for six months. Lewis had burglary warrants issued in Monroe, Louisiana, and that maybe the reason he took an alias.

Tuesday, Lewis appeared in Lubbock County Court to be arraigned for capital murder. Again, he's now in the Lubbock County Jail, on a $1-million bond.

Lubbock County District Attorney Matt Powell tells us it's too early to say whether they'll seek the death penalty in this case.

Authorities Credit Eyewitness Tips In the Arrest Of A Murder Suspect
The recent murder in Southwest Lubbock marks the 9th in the Hub City this year and out of those nine, only one is unsolved. In this case, police say it was neighbors that led them to a suspect in less than 2 hours. NewsChannel 11's Julia Bruck spent the day piecing together the events that lead up to that arrest.
