LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD)- As family and friends mourn the loss of a Lubbock infant, investigators continue efforts to answer questions.

Last week police launched an investigation after the baby died from what doctors said were suspicious injuries. Lubbock Police confirm the child that died was 11-month-old Shawn Smith.

Police tell us, due to the nature of the case, this is a homicide investigation and has been since the beginning. Investigators say the baby went to University Medical Center Emergency room with injuries that did not appear accidental. Doctors alerted investigators the infant's death March 5. Earlier this week police told us preliminary autopsy results indicate homicide. Still the exact cause of death has not yet been released.

According to an obituary, Smith's funeral services were held on Thursday. The child died just a few days before his first birthday.

Police tell us the case is still under investigation. We will continue to follow it and bring you more as it becomes available.
