A new tool for detecting oral cancer

A trip to the dentist these days isn't just to check for cavities.  Now dentists have a quick, new way to check for oral cancer that could save lives.

It's as simple as gargling with a drink called Vizilite, a liquid you swish around in your mouth.  Then, a dentist or hygienist looks into your mouth with what looks like a glow stick.  Dentists say that Vizilite can help find oral cancer early, in stages one or two, whereas a visual exam may not discover it until it is more obvious and more serious.

Even though Vizilite is considered an effective way to find oral cancer at its earliest stage, the experts say it may give some patients a false security that nothing is there when it may be.  Experts also say the best screening for oral cancer is a swish with Vizilite along with a visual exam by your dentist.
