MIDLAND, TX - A 3-year-old Midland girl was airlifted to Lubbock Thursday evening after suffering internal injuries when she was struck while standing in a driveway, police said.
The girl, whose name has not yet been released, was standing behind a red Pontiac Grand Prix around 7 p.m. in the 1400 block of West Washington, Midland police said.
Her 22-year-old uncle, who has also not been named, was backing out of the driveway and struck the girl. Officials say they believe she was not run over with a tire, but said the car was low enough to cause severe internal injuries when she was hit with the bumper. Two small spots of blood dotted the driveway where she'd been hit.
Police were investigating Thursday to determine the speed at which she was hit and other details in relation to the incident.
Her grandfather told Midland police she had been running in and out of the front door with other kids at the house and when the other children came back inside they weren't aware the 3-year-old hadn't followed them.
She was immediately transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, police said, and was airlifted to Lubbock just before 8 p.m.
