Snow & cold grip northern South Plains/Panhandle - KCBD NewsChannel 11 Lubbock

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Just north of Lubbock, weather and road conditions were much worse than in the city, including a wind chill of below zero temperatures.

NewsChannel 11's Cary Allen reports, "Road conditions between Lubbock and Plainview were fine, but in Swisher County some snow drifts are at least 3 feet deep. Snow plows came through and kept the roads clear along Highway 86 but there were still some areas where drifting snow can be 3 to 6 feet deep in some locations."

Further north in the Panhandle, it looked more like upstate New York on Friday. A spring blizzard struck Amarillo Friday morning prompting officials to shut down several highways, giving children across 20 counties the day off from school.

National Guard troops are also on standby to help any motorists who get stranded in the winter weather, and officials say residents should expect snowdrifts of up to 20 feet before the storm passes by Saturday afternoon.
