LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - NewsChannel 11 is tracking both good and bad news on the Lubbock economy.
The newest unemployment figures show Lubbock improved from January to February, but we're still in the doghouse compared to last year. Lubbock's unemployment is 4.5%. That's much better than the state unemployment rate of 6.6% and the national rate of 8.9%. Those are not seasonally adjusted numbers.
If you take a closer look at the Lubbock economy; Lubbock's labor force has grown from 139,900 in February of last year to 140,600 in February of this year. That's an increase of 700 people. Meanwhile, the number of people who actually had a job went down by 800. That means more people want a job at a time when there are less jobs available.
But Lubbock ties for the second best unemployment rate in Texas, tied with Amarillo at 4.5%. Midland is on top with a rate of 3.9%.
There are an estimated 6,300 people in Lubbock currently looking for work.
