LEVELLAND, TX (Levelland Economic Development Corporation) - This will be the first World Series hosted by Levelland. A Babe Ruth World Series has a high economic impression on any community that plays host to this prestigious event, especially the local hotels, restaurants, businesses and resort areas.
Levelland is the county seat of Hockley County, located on the Llano Estacado, west of Lubbock. If you're a sports lover, you'll be glad to find out that Levelland is known as the city of sports champions. They are the site for playoff games and is the national home of the highly competitive Little Dribbler's basketball program. In addition to Lobo Stadium, Levelland has several other excellent sports facilities including Gano Tubb Gymnasium and South Plains College's crown jewel, the Texan Dome.
The area was first settled in the 1800's. In November of 1957, the city was the site of a series of UFO sightings. A number of motorists driving around Levelland claimed to see a large, egg-shaped object emitting a blue glow which shut off their automobiles. The day after the sightings, the entire city was full of newspaper reporters and other interested parties. The United States Air Force claimed a severe electrical storm was the major cause for the sightings and auto failures; however, prominent UFO researchers and astronomers argued there was no electrical storm in the area when the sightings occurred. The case of the Levelland, Texas landings is still unsolved.
In addition to an annual Bluegrass Camp, there are many other great attractions in Levelland and Lubbock. There are also numerous parks and open spaces. Levelland Country Club offers a 9-hole golf course and fishing can be enjoyed on Lobo Lake.
In making the announcement BRL Vice President/Commissioner Robert Faherty said, "We are honored to be going to Levelland with our 2010 13-Year-Old World Series. I was not only impressed with their community, but was also amazed by their commitment to youth. In awarding a World Series, the main factors we consider are the facility, the Headquarters Hotel, the areas where the players will be housed and community support. We also look for areas that in addition to offering a competitive athletic experience, can also offer a diverse cultural and educational experience. Levelland has all of these ingredients and more. The 2010 Babe Ruth 13-Year-Old World Series will be a fun and memorable time for all."
