LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A new report from the Southwest Farm Press says Texas farmers may have to cut peanut production by 30 percent. That's bad news for Lubbock and the South Plains since most Texas peanuts are grown within a two hour drive of Lubbock.
Blame it on the PCA facilities in Plainview and Blakely Georgia. You might remember that officials found salmonella contamination in both which led to a nationwide recall of roughly 3,000 products.
Peanut farmers were already suffering bad prices even before the peanut scare. And it's not like all those farmers can just switch to cotton because cotton prices are expected to remain depressed for the next couple of years.
