LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The federal tax increase on cigarettes goes into effect Wednesday, jumping from 30 cents a pack to over $1 just for the tax.
Whether or not smokers are in line for cigarettes, they are jamming the lines for help. The stop smoking hot lines are seeing double, even triple, the amount of calls they normally have. Jeremy Whitaker, Quit Line Coordinator, says that, "Smoking is actually really price sensitive. When the price increases 10%, adult consumption drops by about 4%, youth consumption drops by about 7%".
Most hot lines offer quitting tips and support groups while others have free nicotine patches, gum, or lozenges. The Texas Quit Line, if you can get through to an operator, is 1-877-YES-QUIT or 1-877-937-7848.
