Shriner's Hospitals facing closure

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The dismal economy is showing its face in hospitals funded by donations.

The board of trustees governing all 22 Shriner's Hospitals in North America has recommended that five Shriner's Hospitals be closed because of a budget shortfall.  These hospitals treat orthopedic patients at no cost.  The final decision on the closures will come this summer when delegates vote at their annual meeting in San Antonio.

The Shriner's Hospital in Galveston was already closed after Hurricane Ike, but officials are still trying to decide whether that facility should reopen.

Closures are proposed in:

  • Shreveport, Louisiana
  • Erie, Pennsylvania
  • Spokane, Washington
  • Springfield, Massachusetts
  • Greenville, South Carolina
