South Plains employers give tips to job seekers

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - More than 70 employers and hundreds of job seekers participated in the South Plains Job Fair Wednesday.

In today's tough economy there are more people looking for jobs than there are jobs available, but it isn't impossible to find one. A few of the employers at the job fair shared what they're looking for in an applicant.

Within in the first hour of the fair about 50 people stopped by Anthony Pearson's booth, but one man in particular caught his eye, a man who Pearson says was assertive and confident. "I like people that come directly to me and say exactly who they are, and what they're looking for, and why they're looking for it. That sets them apart from other people," said Pearson.

Pearson and other employers say appearance is one of the first things they look for. "People need to come in to apply and dress in a way that's appropriate for the job that they're applying for," said Ron Woods with Express Employment Professionals.

Employers also say make sure you fill out the application completely. "Have all of the information on the application including actual dates, stops of employment, and phone numbers because businesses check references," said Woods.

These tips could help you be the one who stands out to employers like Pearson, who says he will probably hire that assertive man who stopped by his booth.
