The Texas Tech volleyball team had six players named to Academic All-Big XII Teams, announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon. Laura Grote, Kelly Johnson, Melissa McGehee, Stacey Poole, and Courtney Shambaugh were all selected to the first team while Jessy Herrera was named to the second team.
For Grote, Johnson, and McGehee, this is the second time they have been acknowledged for their work in the classroom, after being named to Verizon Academic All-Region teams. Tuesday's award is the third time that senior Melissa McGehee has been named to the first team. For Johnson and Poole, this is their second such award.
"I am very happy to have had six players receive this award," commented Head Coach Jeff Nelson. "This award is a tribute to the work that these players put into their classwork as well as on the court. We have always tried to recruit great athletes that were also great students. Awards like this are just another in a long standing tradition of great student-athletes not only in volleyball, but at Texas Tech University."
The six student-athletes representing Tech this year is the second most in school history; only the 1997 team had more with seven. Since Nelson started coaching at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders have received 35 Big XII academic awards.
