Shigellosis is really a fancy name for a terrible case of diarrhea which can drag on for a week. The City of Lubbock Health Department has issued an alert to families that 19 cases have been reported since November 11th.
"We're concerned because with the Thanksgiving holidays coming up, people will be gathering in large family groups and it's very easily spread person to person just because hands are not washed before eating," says Tiji Ward of the Lubbock Health Department.
The bad news is Shigellosis is hard to treat. Antibiotics don't work so you just have to wait it out with fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps that last four to seven days. The good news is Shigellosis is easily prevented. You have to swallow the bacteria to get infected, and as Tiji mentioned, simply by washing your hands often, you wash away the risk of Shigellosis.
