Warning Signs of Sexual Abuse

According to Childrens Protective Services, there are some pretty clear warning signs. Many people think it's strangers that abuse children, but more times than not, it's someone that is involved in your child's life, someone they trust. So, how do you know? What should you do? NewsChannel 11 set out to answer those questions for you.

"I think some of the signs you look for are abrupt changes in behavior; children who are typically happy but are all of a sudden unhappy or fearful. I think children that are suddenly fearful to go someplace that they in the past have been happy to go, or if they've been happy with a certain person then they are all of a sudden fearful or hesitant to go with that person," said Camille Gilliam, Children's Protective Services.

Gilliam says these behaviors don't necessarily mean your child is being abused, but they are signs to talk about. "One out of every four boys and one out of every three girls would be sexually abused in some manner during their childhood, and again then, that doesn't mean we think strangers do this to kids, but in most instances, it's someone they know and most likely trust."

Our expert says that it's also important to talk to your children about good touches, like hugs and kisses. If you ever have any questions or concerns, you are urged to call the police or Childrens Protective Services for help.
