Depression and heart disease

Posted:

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - It is unfortunate enough when someone with heart disease is depressed.  Ironically, that depression could make heart problems even worse.

Researchers at intermountain Medical Center have now documented an increased risk of heart failure in patients who also suffer from depression.  Dr. Heidi May, Epidemiologic Researcher, says, "We found that there was a 50-percent increase in risk with patients with heart disease to develop heart failure".  Dr. May says the reason that is important to know is that could change the way doctors treat patients who are diagnosed with heart disease.

More studies are needed, but this is just one more reason symptoms of depression should not go ignored, especially if that person has heart issues.
