London enforces new laws banning fast food near schools

Posted:
LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - For the first time today, in what could become more and more common, London authorities closed down a fast food restaurant for being located too close to a school.  You see, they have new rules in London to fight childhood obesity.  This first fast food shutdown was in East London.  Apparently, the restaurant broke the rules, which bans hot food outlets near schools, parks, or playgrounds.  The ban also limits the total number of take-out restaurants in the center of town, which cannot be closer than 300 yards apart.

Town council members say they were pressured to act on the obesity trend.  Clyde Loakes, a council member, said, "They wanted us to specifically to say enough is enough, close these places down, come up with some policies that will enable you to do that, and that's what we've done".  London officials say they had to do something to fight childhood obesity since a million British youth are expected to be obese by the year 2010.
