Don't let the simple, throw-back style packaging fool you. Reed's Rocket Nut Cracker is not only "new and improved," its America's finest. And don't forget, (according to the maker) its unique design cracks soft shell nuts faster, better and easier than before.
Screw in the handle and we're set. The Rocket's five star cracking action is specifically made to crack pecans, walnuts, almonds, filberts and Brazil nuts.
The nut cracker is adjustable. The threaded cone easily screws in and out to adjust to different types of nuts. With the first try we learned that is there's a fine line between cracking and crushing. You have to apply enough pressure on the lever to begin the crack but you don't want to crush.
Brazil nuts were much harder to crack. When testing them, we butchered many of them. The Brazil nuts were not so good. The nuts were fine though, but they're definitely the Rocket's greatest and somewhat unrealized challenge.
The learning curve was perhaps the greatest on the almond front. With a quick adjustment of the threaded cone, I soon mastered the almonds. If you adjust the rocket down to its smallest size, it makes room for filberts. This gadget is perfect for filberts.
Does it work? The Rocket is not perfect, and the old handheld models still have their place especially with Brazil nuts. But it's fun, sturdy and quite possibly, America's finest. We give it a "yes."
