The fate of 200 workers at Covenant Health System continues to hang in the balance. P.R. Director for Covenant, Eddie Owens, told NewsChannel 11 Friday the hospital has not decided how to deal with a $40-million budget cut. As it stands now, the hospital is considering layoffs of about 200 employees.
Covenant says the budget is being reduced mainly because reimbursements from programs like Medicare are not making up for the actual costs of medical procedures. We are told layoffs would likely not affect patient care workers, but all other departments are susceptible. Owens says the hospital will look for other ways to make cuts, before laying off anybody.
