Afghan intelligence agents have reportedly arrested a man who allegedly plotted to kill Afghanistan's president and the country's defense minister. A security official says the man -- an Iraqi Kurd -- has confessed to targeting President Hamid Karzai and the minster of defense.
The official says the 22 year-old man said he wanted to kill Karzai as his motorcade returned from the airport following a recent trip to New York. However, the man says he crossed into Afghanistan from Pakistan too late, and changed his target to the defense minister. The man was arrested on Friday in Kabul. Officials say he was casing the street in front of the minister's house and had followed the man's movements around the city. Officials aren't sure if the man is working with al-Qaida, but they say they have proof he's linked to several Taliban leaders hiding in Pakistan. Karzai was the target of an assassination attempt in September. Copyright 2002 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
